Castle Connolly released its annual list of top hospitals in New Jersey. The list was compiled using a survey of physicians and hospital administrators, and combined that with patient ratings in post-discharge surveys obtained by an independent non-profit healthcare consulting organization. Being careful not to assign improper weight to larger hospitals, the facilities were divided into two groups: those with under 350 beds, and those with more than 350 beds. There is an overall listing for the top hospitals in the state, and then listings broken down by treatment category.

The overall top hospital with more than 350 beds was Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ, and the leader with under 350 beds was Newton Medical Center in Newton, NJ. St. Barnebas Medical Center was rated the top large hospital in many categories, such as the best facility for the treatment of breast cancer, prostate cancer, pediatric cancer, hip and knee repair, congestive heart failure, stroke, high risk pregnancy, and neurological disorders.  Bayonne Medical Center was the leading small hospital in many of the same categories.
