It may seem exorbitant, but a new study shows that over 24,000 kids each year visit the hospital due to shopping cart injuries. Between 1990 and 2011, 530,494 children had to go to the hospital because of injuries sustained due to shopping carts – which averages out to more than 24,000 children injured a year, or 66 children injured each day. The most common injuries involve falling from a shopping cart or being hit by one. The head was the most commonly injured part of the body, accounting for 78.1 percent of injuries. While the majority of injuries were soft tissue, the number of internal head injuries and concussions rose gradually throughout the course of the study.
The researchers suggested redesigning shopping carts to make them more difficult to tip over, and putting the child’s seat closer tot he ground. The simplest solution is to always be mindful of kids when around shopping carts. Read more on the Huffington Post.
