A new set of bills in New Jersey are taking aim at the so-called “Knockout Game” that is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. In this game, individuals attack an unsuspecting victim in public, with the goal of knocking her unconscious. The attacks are often recorded on video. Currently, these attacks are classified as a third-degree assault, punishable by a three to five-year prison term and a fine of $15,000. The new bills would increase the penalties, making the attack a second-degree aggravated assault, punishable by ten to fifteen-years in prison, and a fine of $150,000. Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, a bill sponsor, said that a crime committed for enjoyment or kicks, purely to hurt someone, should be treated differently than a bar fight or something done in the heat of passion. The bills would also increase the penalties for recording such an attack.
