Hospitals Not Implementing Best Hand Hygiene Practices

A new survey finds that only 30% of hospitals surveyed implemented WHO guidelines for proper hand hygiene.  Proper hand hygiene is essential to reduce Hospital-Associated Infections (HAIs).  Ninety percent of respondents indicated that the WHO hand hygiene standards were more stringent than their own, but only one in twelve had implemented that higher standard in their facility.  The study indicated that one  in 20 patients contract an HAI infection, resulting in 1.7 million infections in the U.S. annually and causing 100,000 deaths.
